Project TUTC Chamba Camp Diskit
Pegging New Standards for Luxury
Pegging New Standards for Luxury
Challenge
The second Luxury “Glamping” location in Ladakh, we were assigned the design of a truly mobile camp that could move from one location to another leaving behind minimal infrastructure and ensuring that the guests enjoyed a sense of wholesome luxury in the vast Nubra valley where the Shyok river flows.
The Nubra valley lies beyond the famous Khardungla pass on the road to Turtuk. The Shyok river flows through the valley that has a wide basin which is under seasonal cultivation and some areas have been rendered useless due to underground salinity. The land identified for the project was not under cultivation due to immense salinity that did not allow any cropping however it did border a small lake.
Interpretation
It was decided that the orientation of the camp would face the Maitreya Buddha and the Diskit Monastrey in the distance that stood out amidst the harsh and stark landscape of the mountain ranges that surround the valley. The camp was set up with minimal intervention in the guest areas by making rammed earth plinths where the tents were pitched and the common areas were located giving a view of both sides of the valley. The furniture was customized to compliment the selected style of tents and also to give an enhanced luxury experience keeping in mind the need for ease of packing, storage and transport during the off-season.
Solution
We explored materials that evoked luxury while staying true to the solid construction and longevity that a travelling camp needs. The Luxury Camp has been created using high quality construction and detailing, to deliver a pristine experience that stands apart from any existing offering in the market. The furniture is extremely well-built and solid, designed to completely knock-down or fold to fit into custom packaging.
