Project TUTC Chamba Camp Thiksey
Pegging New Standards for Luxury
Pegging New Standards for Luxury
Challenge
A first for Luxury “Glamping” in India, we were assigned the design of a truly mobile camp that could move from one location to another leaving behind minimal infrastructure and ensuring that the guests enjoyed a sense of wholesome luxury in the stark and imposing landscape of Ladakh.
The camp was to be built under the spiritual shadow of the Thiksey Monastrey near Leh, which overlooks the entire camp, the site has two irrigation streams that run through it. These streams helped feed the three water bodies created at strategic locations in the camp that elevated the experience.
Interpretation
We interpreted the challenge into solutions derived from the unique landscape selected for the camp. Our design solution had to meet the stringent requirements of luxury hospitality, making sure all aspects of the camp that the guests come in contact with expressed uncompromising aesthetics and comfort, while also designing for ease of packing, storage and transport during off-season.
Solution
We explored materials that evoked luxury while staying true to the solid construction and longevity that a travelling camp needs. The Luxury Camp has been created using high quality construction and detailing, to deliver a pristine experience that stands apart from any existing offering in the market. The furniture is extremely well-built and solid, designed to completely knock-down or fold to fit into custom packaging. Due to the harsh winter the camp is only live for five months a year hence all infrastructure is packed away and stored or transported to be deployed elsewhere.
All Back of house, kitchen and boundary wall construction is made out of rammed earth sourced locally.
